Who Needs 2TB Of Phone Storage?

You won’t usually see anyone carrying a 2TB smartphone because it isn’t that common. It isn’t usually easy to justify having a smartphone with this much storage, especially due to the added costs that come with a more premium option. The iPhone 18 Pro Max 2TB option costs $1200 more than the 256GB base model.

On the other hand, there are some people who do actually need this type of storage, and they have plenty of uses for it. Users who can take advantage of the 2TB storage are typically those who regularly create or keep large files on their devices. The best examples are photographers, video editors, and content creators with large original libraries. Users who like to play demanding games on their smartphone and keep apps and media locally instead of a cloud system also have much to gain from the additional storage. Otherwise, 2TB of phone storage isn’t something the average user would need.

Content creators can benefit from 2TB of phone storage

There are currently only four phones that offer 2TB of storage: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro Max and Huawei Mate XT 2 Extraordinary Master Stylus Set. Content creators can create any type of content from these phones; especially the iPhone 17 Pro Max or the 18 Pro and Pro Max models, because Apple markets them specifically toward professional filmmakers and content creators. There are features like ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock that not only utilize high storage, but are also media features that would attract professional creators.

Apple’s own documentation says that the ProRes files can be up to 30 times the size of the HEVC files. With ProRes recording, creators are going to have much larger file sizes. Apple also requires a portion of the device storage (10% to be precise) to remain free when recording ProRes. This is why the 2TB storage matters for those who want to use these features and make long-format content such as vlogs, filmmaking, and other types of long-format videos. Now, the smartphone won’t just be good for recording the hefty files; instead, it can be used to edit those files too.

Photographers, video creators, and power users also benefit

Now, content creators can be video creators, but this is essentially for those who like to capture footage of things aside from filmmaking, vlogging, and such. Video creators or photographers who maintain large libraries of original files can actually benefit from the 2TB storage. Adobe Lightroom on mobile supports RAW files and proprietary RAW formats from supported cameras and DNG. That said, as footage can be transferred to external storage, the 2TB storage option is viable only for those who want to keep large amounts of original footage on the device locally.

Another type of user who can take advantage of the 2TB is going to be a power user. So, if a person wants to do everything on their mobile and doesn’t want anything to do with physical drives or iCloud, 2TB of storage could benefit them. Other than that, having a vast number of local libraries containing different high-resolution videos and games can fill up the space quite quickly.

Now, many popular AAA games can be played on the latest iPhones via the App Store, such as many of the games in the “Resident Evil” series like “Resident Evil 2,” “Resident Evil Village,” and more, along with “Assassin’s Creed Mirage” and “Death Stranding Director’s Cut.” These games can take up plenty of storage, so with 2TB of storage, one could download as many games as possible, along with other videos from subscription services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney+, and YouTube.
