5 iPhone 18 Pro Max Features That Can Make Traveling Easier

The iPhone 18 Pro Max has been dubbed Apple’s best iPhone in reviews, even though it might not be the most revolutionary smartphone the company currently sells. With the longest battery life on an iPhone ever, pro controls for the new camera system, and an improved vapor chamber, this device is perfect for everyday use and when you’re traveling. While there are a few essential accessories that make the traveling with your phone easier, having a flagship smartphone like the iPhone 18 Pro Max can make the experience a lot smoother.

Among the new features Apple added, users get the A20 Pro chip, which has 50% more memory bandwidth than the processor available on the previous model, and a 40% faster GPU that can make playing games and rendering complex graphics a lot easier. It also comes with a new 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine that makes AI processing a breeze. Apple also included its proprietary 5G modem for the first time on a Pro iPhone, which the company claims offers better cellular quality and reliability. It is also more energy efficient compared to the previous C1X chip available on the iPhone Air. All of these improvements are ideal for when we think about traveling.

1. An all-new 5G chip

The iPhone 18 Pro Max includes the C2 chip, which is the third-generation of Apple’s custom-made 5G modem. Apple first included its own modem in the iPhone 16e with the C1 chip, then followed with the C1X in the iPhone Air and iPhone 17e. These proprietary 5G modems help improve power efficiency, signal quality, and reliability. Apple says the C2 chip on the new iPhones is 15% more efficient than the one in the iPhone Air, while also offering mmWave support for the first time in the U.S. With that, you can expect 5G to work even better, as Apple can tightly control hardware and software.

In the U.S., the iPhone 18 Pro Max is eSIM only, just like the past few generations. eSIMs can be a great option whenever you’re traveling. iPhone 18 Pro Max users can also have two active SIM numbers simultaneously — with users being able to have over eight eSIM numbers installed on the phone. That means you can use a travel eSIM for internet connectivity when you’re abroad, while still getting calls and messages to your regular number. Another eSIM benefit is that it makes the experience of using the iPhone safer. Should your iPhone ever be stolen, the thieves could steal the SIM and insert it into their own phones to get your 2FA messages and potentially access your accounts. Without a physical SIM card, it’s harder for them to do that.

2. Improved vapor chamber

The iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with the powerful A20 Pro chip. After a few years of Pro chips overheating on the latest iPhone Pro models, Apple added a vapor chamber to the iPhone 17 Pro, which helps cool down the chip for improved sustained peak performance, and longer battery life. It also helps to ensure the display continues to be bright even in direct sunlight. With the iPhone 18 Pro release, Apple says the vapor chamber on this device is even better, and BGR tested it, as it now sits on top of the processor to send the heat away and keep the processor cooler for longer.

This improved functionality can be especially useful during common activities while you’re traveling, such as taking hundreds of photos, checking navigation all the time, translating signs from a foreign language, FaceTiming your friends, and occasionally playing some games while waiting in a queue. If you currently use an iPhone 16 Pro or older device, you might know the feeling of going outside with an app open and the sun just immediately dims your iPhone display, it starts to get too hot, and the battery just drains super fast. With the iPhone 18 Pro Max, users shouldn’t get this stressful experience anymore.

3. All-new pro camera features

If you’re anything like me when traveling, recording every little detail of your trip is a must. From the day you pack your luggage to random receipts, museums we visit, and just the life from a different city can be enough to pack the photo library of your iPhone. With the new iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple offers, for the first time, a Camera app that looks a lot more like third-party pro camera apps, as it brings more freedom for users to control their shots. Compared to the previous iPhone generation, Apple offers five new camera controls. Users can now control aperture, focus, shutter speed, and white balance, plus access a histogram.

If you have time to give an extra thought on your upcoming shot, you can choose between a lens aperture ranging from f/1.48 to f/4.0, which can help maximize the amount of light the iPhone can capture. On the other hand, if you choose a smaller aperture setting, you can deepen the depth of field and make a photo with several subjects a lot more sharp. Combining those options with new manual focus settings can make complex shots a lot simpler to take. With the new shutter speed option, you can adjust from 1/1600 of a second up to 1 second. In this case, fast shutter speeds freeze fast-moving action, while slow shutter speeds gather more light, which can be used to create intentional motion blur.

4. More Live Activities at once

On the iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple was able to hide one of the Face ID components under the display, making the Dynamic Island slightly smaller. Introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro, this is the first time Apple has tweaked the Dynamic Island. Thanks to its smaller size, users can take advantage of up to three Live Activities at once. This can be useful when you have a timer, checking your flight gate, while also looking for directions all at once.

The iPhone prioritizes the Live Activity that features the most important information, while the other two just get a smaller, rounded circle on the sides of the main Dynamic Island. This way, iPhone users can easily tap into what’s happening in real time. It can be very useful during a trip, as you don’t need to keep going back and forth between certain apps, as you can just glance at the Dynamic Island.

Besides that, Live Activities can also be responsible for other useful data, such as if you’re following a match on Apple Sports, see what song you’re currently listening to, if a video is being properly exported, how much the rain will last, and so on. It’s also important to note that Live Activities can be checked from the Lock Screen in cards or even from the Apple Watch, also through cards, on the Smart Stack, as your iPhone shows the most important information first.

5. Longer battery life

Last but not least, whenever you’re traveling, you need your iPhone to last as long as possible. Fortunately, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the longest battery life on any iPhone to date. According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro Max can withstand up to 45 hours of video playback. In comparison, the iPhone with the longest battery life before this one was the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which could last up to 35 hours of video playback. Whether you’re on a plane or you’re just using your phone regularly, this increase in battery life is very welcome.

Apple also says that the iPhone 18 Pro Max can charge 50% in 30 minutes and that only five minutes of wired charging can give this smartphone seven hours of video playback. More importantly, according to Apple’s new battery usage model that uses real-world data, the proper amount of hours the iPhone 18 Pro Max should last regularly on a full charge is 30 hours.

For traveling, which we’re often using unreliable cellular connectivity, map apps all the time, taking pictures, and recording videos more often. The iPhone 18 Pro Max should give users more leverage to enjoy these experiences before they need to think about putting this phone to charge or getting an emergency power bank.
