Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro might have only been on sale for a matter of weeks, but eyes are already on the next update.
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to be announced in September 2026, and a new report claims that we can look forward to a big camera upgrade.

According to an ETNews report picked up by MacRumors, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will both have a new variable aperture camera. The move would see the devices replace the main wide-angle camera for something entirely new.
By using a variable aperture the iPhone 18 Pro would be able to adjust how much light is allowed into the camera’s sensor. That would be most useful for dark rooms and night-time photography, but it will also help prevent over-exposure during bright scenes, too.
The report suggests that the new, variable camera will be made by Foxconn and LG Innotech, while the actuator for the lens will be produced by Luxshare ICT and Sunny Optical. This would also be the first time that Apple has offered a variable aperture on one of its iPhones and has the potential to be a big upgrade.

As MacRumors notes, Samsung previously offered a variable camera on its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 models. However, the feature was removed from subsequent phones as a result of the costs and additional thickness associated with the parts.
