Which GPU Maker Is Better On A Budget?

Deciding how to choose between AMD and Nvidia isn’t simply based on which company makes the faster graphics card. Both companies offer strong options across the mainstream and budget segments, but each utilizes a different approach. In the budget segment, AMD’s RX 9000 series cards generally offer better rasterization performance for the money, more VRAM, and competitive pricing. Nvidia’s RTX 50 series is more focused on DLSS, AI acceleration, and frame generation.

The question isn’t which GPU is going to be faster on paper, but which graphics card offers a better overall experience based on the money you spend. Generally, AMD is going to win on pricing, so on paper it may seem like a better budget option, but there are many things to consider. If you simply want to game at 1080p or 1440p, Radeon’s RX 9060 XT is generally going to be a better budget option. However, Nvidia’s graphics cards would seem more compelling when your needs extend beyond traditional rasterized gaming.

AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB vs. Nvidia RTX 5060 8GB

Comparing the RX 9060 XT 8GB with the RTX 5060, the former has the edge in gaming. Tom’s Hardware’s current GPU hierarchy puts the RX 9060 XT 8GB variant ahead of the RTX 5060 in terms of overall rasterization/ray tracing performance. The RX 9060 XT 8GB variant in 1440p rasterization testing was faster than the RTX 5060 by about 11%. However, the RTX 5060 supports DLSS 4, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation, along with fourth-generation RT cores.

Both cards have the same amount of VRAM, but do note that the RTX 5060 has faster GDDR7 memory compared to the GDDR6 of the RX 9060 XT 8GB. Also, both of these cards’ original MSRP is $299, but the prices have been changed significantly.

The cheapest version of the RX 9060 XT 8GB can be found for around $450 retail price. On the other hand, the RTX 5060 can be found for around $440, so the price difference isn’t huge. Depending on what your needs are, for straightforward 1080p gaming, AMD has the edge. For ray-traced gaming, along with upscaling and frame-generation features, Nvidia has the upper hand.

AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB vs. Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti 16GB

Comparing the RTX 9060 XT 16GB to the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, this is where the price difference is going to be much bigger. The former was launched at $349 MSRP, while the latter was launched at $429 MSRP; a difference of $80 at launch.

Tom’s Hardware currently places the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB ahead in overall performance, but the RX 9060 XT 16GB is a much cheaper option. Independent 15-game testing from TechSpot revealed that the RTX 5060 Ti is about 9% faster than the RX 9060 XT at native 1440p. However, at that time, the pricing of the former was 23% higher, making the RX 9060 XT a better budget option.

Currently, the RX 9060 XT costs anywhere from $380 to $510, and the RX 5060 Ti 16GB variant’s cheapest option is close to $800, with the price going over $1100 for some variants. This makes the price difference between the two around $400-600, meaning the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB costs more than twice as much as the RX 9060 XT 16GB.
