Switching from a Samsung phone to a Google Pixel phone can be a jarring experience, especially if you’ve been a long-term Samsung user or have been loyal to the brand since the early days of the Galaxy S and its carrier variants. While both run Android as their primary operating system (OS), they still have enough differences in their hardware and software experiences that set them apart.
The first major difference is their custom Android skins. Google Pixel devices run Pixel UI, Google’s non-stock Android skin that is one of the purest versions of Android you can get, while Samsung devices run One UI. Users have pitted Pixel UI against One UI since One UI launched in late 2019, a few years after the first Pixel phone had launched. But one custom OS experience isn’t necessarily better than the other — it mostly comes down to personal preference. That said, your experience can feel vastly different when Samsung has specific Galaxy apps and One UI tools.
Fortunately, data transfer across devices is easy. Normally, your Samsung account data is linked to a Google account, so all your content, including third-party app data, contacts, and photos, is carried over. However, you won’t be able to transfer any Samsung apps or One UI-specific features, like Good Lock, since Google doesn’t support them.
1. Loss of Good Lock
One immediate advantage of owning a Samsung phone is access to Good Lock, which is also considered one of the most essential apps every Samsung owner should download. Good Lock encompasses a series of modules that can change your software experience at the system level. Popular Good Lock modules include Home Up, which lets you reshape and resize app icons, folders, and widgets without default restrictions on your home screen. It also includes configurable gesture shortcuts for launching apps, taking screenshots, and accessing AI features.
These modules are all officially supported by Samsung and are continuously updated with One UI, ensuring they remain compatible with the software. That’s why, if you switch to a Google Pixel, you can’t use Good Lock natively. If redesigning your home or lock screen isn’t to your liking, another one of Samsung’s most popular modules is Sound Assistant. Sound Assistant lets you individually control volume for each app, as well as play audio from two at the same time. Sadly, there isn’t a similar app for the Pixel that does this, which is why it’s one of the most missed modules after swapping.
2. No real substitute for Samsung’s Routines and Modes
Google Pixel phones have Pixel Rules, a built-in automation feature, but its options are fairly limited. It can trigger based on factors like location or your network status, such as whether your device is connected. Typically, you pair this with actions that tamper with sound and notifications, so you can set your phone to silence itself depending on where you are. For example, if you are attending class and want to keep your phone silent while you’re there, you could set up an automation to silence your phone. It’s helpful, but not game-changing, and it’s a lot less advanced than options like Routines and Modes settings found on Samsung devices.
With Routines and Modes, you can set automations to be tailored to conditions as your triggers, so if your phone is low on battery, power-saving options can kick in at the same moment. Another is that if your device is running a particular app, you can use it to set the volume and brightness to specific levels to improve your viewing experience. You can also have it trigger based on place and time, so if you’re in the middle of a tutoring session but want to use an app on your phone to facilitate learning, you can set a custom do not disturb mode that blocks all activity except that app to avoid distractions. It’s a powerful tool and one that’s difficult to replicate on a Google Pixel, especially if you’ve used them daily before making the switch.
3. No Galaxy AI support
While some users find Samsung’s AI suite a mixed bag, it does have some helpful uses. Samsung’s Galaxy AI has a few tricks up its sleeve worth noting, and the best Galaxy AI features tend to be the ones you’d least expect, as they integrate more naturally. Take Samsung Notes, for example. Galaxy AI in Samsung Notes includes Note Assist, which can restructure your notes on the fly, correct spellings and grammar, transcribe handwriting, and translate foreign text into your chosen language.
There’s also Browsing Assist, another Galaxy AI feature built into Samsung Browser, which highlights lengthy articles and provides translations. For communication, Live Translate and Interpreter Mode can facilitate real-time conversations with Galaxy AI-powered translation tools. Google does have its own onslaught of Gemini tools meant to enhance Google services and some Pixel apps, but if you’re someone already accustomed to the Samsung ecosystem, making the sudden shift might not be as easy. This is especially the case if you’ve been a long-time user of Samsung Notes and grown used to its features, since Samsung Notes can’t be installed on Pixel phones.
4. No Edge Panels
Edge Panels have become a core feature on Galaxy devices since 2014. It’s a sidebar that stays tucked away on your home screen and apps. Swiping to expand the window brings up all manner of features, such as shortcuts to apps, contacts, and tools like AI Select, ruler, flashlight, and compass. Edge Panels also make it easy to multitask. You can use them for app shortcuts, create and save app pairs to combine views on one screen, or even use them to open floating windows.
It’s also a nifty way to keep your home screen clean by placing your most-used apps in the Edge Panel. All in all, this simple, customizable sidebar is great for power users, and sadly, Google has nothing to match it. The best you’re going to get is to recreate one from a third-party app, which may include paywalls or offer limited options that aren’t enough to fill the void.
